That is called the evaporative canister. The old GM versions had a replaceable filter. These don't have any serviceable parts from what I am aware of. There should be a hose with an inline solenoid called the purge solenoid going into it.

yep, charcoal canister. when gas evaporates from the gas tank it goes into there, and is eventually (if the purge solenoid is working right) put into the engine. Its considered a lifetime item, and shouldnt need to ever be touched unless you're having evaporative emission issues (gas fumes).

Sealed? the knobs on the top of mine come off. hmmm maybe they arent supposed to? I do get gas odor in the summer time when it drops below a 1/4 of a tank.

hey i was wondering what that thign was. a buncha dirt and crap fell outta mine. i wanted to just remove it, i guess it has a reason to be there.

is something supposed to plug up to it? im finding a lot of 'unused' parts of the wiring harness, and i found one i think i disconnected from somewhere but i dont remember where. Its located right above this thing, and its the only thing it can go too. Does anything plug into this thing directly?

Yeah I have 2 harnesses that are just hanging around , I think the one by the charcoal canister is for the abs system ?like a test hook up? and the other is near the blower motor, that one i have no clue what its for.
