99 Explorer AWD Starter

FIXED!!!

Ok, My 99 Eplorer AWD isn't starting. I had the battery and alternator tested. Alternator was questionable so I replaced it. Had the battery charged also. Still no start. I hear the "click" of the starter relay but no start. I tried tapping the starter some but no luck there either. My conclusion: Replace the starter.

Now the fun stuff. I need some help on the technique of removing this thing properly. I can't see a good way from under the vehicle to remove the top bolt (maybe a stubby 1/2 wrench?) and the bottom bolt is a litte strange. A 1/2 inch wrench/socket fits on all the bolts, but I can't get the bottom one to turn at all (the one holding the wire down). I'm even a little concerned that it's maybe stripped a little, but I can't get the bolt under the wire to turn either, it's rock solid. I'm thinking that the guys that did my tranny rebuild put those on with an air ratchet.

The next issue I see, if I get the bolts out, is how to get this thing out. It doesn't look like it will fit between the front differential and the engine/pan. Anyone have any experience getting one out that's AWD?

Thanks in advance for the responses. I'm in a bad way here. Being broke down and dead broke aren't pretty, that said, I have to do this myself because I can't afford the tow or the mechanic to replace it.

New information: I was looking at what part of the starter that I can see from the top of the engine and noticed that the ground strap run was |---| that far from the connector itself. Looks like it vibrated loose. I still have the problem of getting my bohemoth hands down there to tighten it. I'm going to try to clean it with some contact spray (if nothing else I've got the fix all bottle of B-12) and try to get it tightened in the morning when I have some daylight.

Anyone know exactly what size that nut is? That info alone would save me a huge headache tomorrow.

thanks again.

Do not assume everything is SAE some things can be Metric.

correct. it was 13mm for the ground strap nut. I figured out a way to get my big hands in there and turn a ratchet one click at a time but I got it and it started right up after I fixed the strap. At least this thread will be here if anyone else runs into this problem.
