i have been doing some research about what toys to put on my X and i came across some cam lifters. what are these and what do they do for performance?

The lifters are what the cam raises to push the pushrod up. Which in turn pushs the rocker and opens the valve. You won't get any performance from them, but there are some that are made for race engine that you don't need. I know the 5.0s came with roller lifters, but not sure about the 4.0s.
 






Yeah, what he-man said. If you're changing out your camshaft it's a good idea to change the lifters as well. Over time they'll wear to your cam so throwing a different cam in there would freak them out. That's pretty much the only reason you hear anything about them while talking about performance parts.
 






4.0's use roller lifters also.
