can a 4x4 transmission be replaced by a 4x2?

hey guys, quick question, might be stupid but looking to get a new transmission for my exploder and i just need to know if i can use a 4x2 transmission on my 4x4 suv? it looks like the only transmission on the v6 is the 5r55e and my book isn't specific if the 4x4 or the 2x4 use a different transmission. thanks a ton,

You could if you want to convert it into a regular 2WD. The output shaft, pan, filter, and extension housing are different.
