You can swap most truck steering wheels to your 96 Explorer, no cars(different shaft shape).
The clock spring is different for almost every different steering wheel. That has to match the steering wheel used, the buttons in it. So if it made the swap, you would also need the dash/column harness to match the clock spring. There aren't resistors in them, just normal fine wires to connect(connectors).
I plan to use a Marauder steering column and wheel in my Lincoln, which has the same steering wheel controls. Making the column wires connect with the dash wires and be useful is the hard part. I'm trying to research if I can use the Explorer EATC in my Lincoln, and the Kenwood deck I have will accept an aftermarket steering wheel controls module. We'll see if it works out, how much trouble it is, that's the big question.
