I know that the transmssions behind the 2.3/3.0 have different ratios than those behind the 4.0, but do they have the same power handling capabilities?

It seems that the wider gear ratios wouldn't be all that undesirable but if the 2.3/4.0 transmission can't handle the higher torque of the 4.0, then I can scratch it off my parts search list

M5OD-R1 for 2.3/3.0L engines........................3.72 2.20 1.50 1.00 0.79
M5OD-R1 for 4.0L engines.............................3.40 2.05 1.31 1.00 0.79
M5OD-R1HD................................................3.40 2.05 1.31 1.00 0.79

I dont know the answer to your question of whether or not they are all rated the same but a wide gear ratio at lower gears is sometimes desirable for towing.

I agree (I shouldn't use double negatives) not only would it give me wider donor options but I like the steeper lower gears, as long as it can handle the higher torque
