Ive got an 00 XLT and also have 2 12" subs and a 650 watt amp from my previous car that i want to hook up in the explorer. I have all the cables and what not and have hooked up systems before but i am wondering if it is possible to hook the amp up to the stock cd player head unit? I was looking at it today and it didnt have any place for RCA hook ups and was wondering if there is some sort of adapter i can buy to hook this up? thanks in advance.

I do believe there is a kit to convert line level to pre-amp. If your amp has line level inputs, then just run wires directly from the HU to the amp, which is what I did.

My friend hooked his factory hu to an amp and powered a sub and it sounds like ass. just something to think about. :D

there is a piece you hook up to your rear speakers and it converts it to rca's its called
a line output converter

what subs and amp are we talking about.

there is a limit to how good it can sound if you do things this way. however, there are also a couple ways around it (which cost a bit more) as well. I need to know what level of equipment we are talking about, if you plan on also upgrading your door speakers, and if you are against getting a new hu for any reason other than $$$ in order to make a good recommendation for how to proceed.

well, they are 2 soundstream 12" not really sure the wattage on them..i know they did sound good in the previous car but that car had a pioneer aftermarket HU. The amp is a Kicker Impulse 652IX i believe that is about 650 watts. I know the stuff is about 2-3 years old. I am most likely going to upgrade the door speakers as I already have a set of Kenwood KFC-1379ie speakers that i bought new this past summer. They put out about 150 watts peak. As for upgrading the HU, i'm not really sure what i want to do there, I'd like to leave the stock HU in there but if it's going to sound ****ty I might not even bother. It is possible to upgrade the HU cause i realized that i do have enough money to get one but i will probably purchase a new one over ebay as they are hella cheaper haha.

I bought a panasonic off ebay for my cherokee and everything was fine. Just watch out for the people selling refurbished ones - unless you want one.

i recommend that you get an aftermarket hu in your situation. Even a real cheap one would be fine.

I just picked up a clarion dxz555mp to use as an auxiliary hu from my distributor for pretty cheap. You could probably get one for about $150 or so on ebay and it would serve you well.
