Hey guys... just wanted to inquire, I want to get a little better performance out of my 2004 Explorer 4.6L and was considering swaping out the muffler for a Magnaflow universal style which they make in various configurations with 2.25" inlets which I'm pretty sure the 3rd gens pipes are stock.

So I called a "performance" shop here in Toronto, to inquire a little more and he's telling me the only way I can switch my muffler is to get the full Magnaflow cat-back kit and he quoted 663.13 + 13% tax.

I realize that would be the best way to go performance wise, but is it true that 3rd gen Explorers can't just have a muffler replaced? Or is this guy just talking out his ass?

I can't see why you would need to buy an entire kit. Just sawzall the old one off and clamp the new one on. Any muffler shop should be able to do it relatively quickly.

Yea dude, they always make mufflers in Different inches.

Like if you got 2.25 inch exhaust pipe, you get a Magnaflow Muffler with 2.25 inch Inlets and Outlets.

This guy MUST be talking out of his ass, probably just trying to sell you an entire exhaust setup, which runs like $500-800 give or take.

He probably just wants to make as much money as possible and is trying to take you for every dollar.....what an #######.
(believe me, install shops ALWAYS do this trick...telling you that you need extra parts or getting you to purchase an Entire Kit instead of just one or two parts......I would NEVER go back there.)

I went to my local Midas, where I know a few guys there.
I got a Flowmaster 40 series installed.
They only charged me $120 or something.
Think it was $80 or 100 for the muffler, then $12 for a piece of pipe they had to weld on to make it fit better. He didnt usually charge me for welding.

They SHOULD make the muffler you want, in the Inch size you want!

The ONLY reason sometimes you can't install a muffler is if the Inlet Outlet is incorrect and simply wont fit.

Thanks for the reply Andy!

And that's what I thought merc. I was doing my research online and was pretty positive if I got the muffler with the right position and size inlets it could be mounted right up with the stock pipe and I'd be good to go.

Then of course the clown at the "performance" shop had to go and blur the lines for me... what gets me is I asked him specifically "can a Magnaflow univeral muffler be swapped out for the stock one in anyway" and he rambled on how it wasn't possible because the $600 one was "specifically" made for my vehicle. haha

Either way, he's not getting any of my money now. By mid-summer I'll probably end up getting a cat-back system, but for now I just want something to help let the engine breath a little better along with the new cold air intake I'm expecting in the mail.

Ok, does anybody know what the stock mufflers dimensions are on a 3rd gen? I took a quick peek underneath and it looks massive! haha

I was going to crawl back under with a tape measure later this evening, but if anyone knows off hand it'd be much appreciated!

I believe they all use the 2.25" size... but it won't hurt to go under and take a look.

haha, yes they are ####ing HUGE!

I think mine was a good 2 1/2 feet ATLEAST lol

Then the flowmaster i had put on was like 1 foot, lol.

I tried looking on autozone and advanceautoparts.com real quick, usually they have stock mufflers, and list the measurements....however they didnt even have stock replacements!

(cause your going to need some 2 1/4 pipe, since the stock muffler is way longer than aftermarket usually.)

the stock muffler is like the size of...

a mid to lrg sze boom box...lol

just massive

wow just realized you were asking the muffler, not the piping... my bad haha:D

I swapped my stock muffler for a Lukey sports muffler and about a foot of pipe to make up the shortfall in length of the new one. Cost around $200AUD (about $120 USD) and the sound is worth the small price.

Haha, yeah I got under and measured. It was exactly 26 inches, not including the length of the inlets! haha

Thanks for all the reply guys!

I ended up getting the muffler swaped. Got a Flowmaster DeltaFlow (Not sure what series exactly yet haha) instead of the Magnaflow because I got a deal for $282 CDN installed with a little labour discount from the shop, and I would have had to wait for them to order in a Magnaflow. Only took them 30 minutes too.

My truck sounds a hell of alot beefier now. Not the loudest V8 I've heard, but it's got a nice deep tone and growl now!

I got that "turn down the stereo and drive around listening to your exhaust" syndrome now! hahaha

Anyone have the part number for a magnaflow or flowmaster 40 series muffler, or atleast know the correct length. Also Ive heard you need Offset/Offset and others say you need Center /Offset, any one know which one is correct?

Tyler,

I didn't even look at my Flowmaster before it was swaped, but when researching I saw the stock muffler had a Center/Offset config. The length doesn't matter, as discussed the stock muffler is MASSIVE compared to regular replacement mufflers. You can get away fine with a shorter than stock version.

I'll try and get back under the truck in a bit and see how the new one is setup.

Haha, hell yeah man!

I think the delta flow is just as loud or louder than the 40 series?
(maybe im thinking of something else.)

I STILL turn down my stereo alot to listen to my exhaust, lol.
I'll be changing CD's or something, and i start hearing my exhaust, and im like "ehh the music can wait a few minutes" haha

The best part is, once your muffler gets broken in more, it will get BETTER sounding and develope more tones,

Atleast i know mine did that.

i dropped a magnaflow muffler in my mounty and i had to add about 6 in to it to make up for the size difference but thats all.

Bump any one know if that for shure the correct muffler before I buy it. Also anyone know if the super 44 or super 40 is better performance wise

damn no one knows, I guess im going to just order it and find out for myself. Im guessing that is the correctr one though.

Local Quality Muffler by me put a 24 series magnaflow in and some custom extension piece installed for 200 out the door i'll take it
