Was wondering that today if theres anyway I could use a tank from like a F250 or something? 20 gal just isnt that much I mean come on I had a 87 5.0 Tbird and that had a 20 gal tank.

Explorer tanks look pretty well tucked-in there, especially beginning in 2002! You might consider sticking in a second tank somewhere it will fit, sitting with it's bottom surface at same height as the stock tank's bottom. They would have to be connected together at both top-side and bottom-side by some sort of piping, tubing, or whatever, the bottom one being big enough to allow the auxiliary tank to fill and empty through it, the top one allowing air (vapor, actually), to expel in and out of the 2nd. tank as it's fuel level changed. You would be drawing fuel (and filling tanks) both at the same time, your existing fuel gauge will still register accurately, just move slower (!), and no problem would be introduced with the vapor-recovery (charcoal cannister) system. Newer Expls. have plastic tanks, that might make the job either easier or harder, not sure which.

Sounds like a fuss just to get extra range. imp

Yeah that sounds like a PITA. It got me thinking cause I need to meet a guy about half-way to sell some seats I have for a mustang and its kinda gonna suck cause I dont think I can make it round trip on one tank (it'll be a 4-5 hour drive). Thats one thing I liked about my dads 04 GMC was it had a 36 gal tank :D (down side was it was a single cab so no room). We drove from Roanoke, VA to Middleborough, MA on just one tank lol now that was nice.

I think i'll just try and improve the mileage instead lol.

During the gas shortage in the '70s, I was driving a VW Squarereback with an 11 gallon tank. I put a tee in the fuel line and added a length of hose to a fitting for motor boat gas tanks. I could fit three 6 gallon boat tanks under the hood and have almost 30 gallons of gas on board. If I took it easy, I had a cruising range of 900 miles. I would just switch tanks as needed. Of course, if I got in a wreck, I'd be in Volkswagen Heaven now.

Haha good idea but im not a big fan of being on fire and with all the deer around here theres a good chance something like that would happen lol.

What about fabbing a tank that will fit where the spare tire goes? Just relocate the spare to a bumper mount.

you may even get a stock Bronco2 tank to fit there. Bronco2's had the center-rear mounted tank like on some Jeeps (Wranglers?).

They were also 20gal tanks.

Well I looked at the measurements for a 31 gal tank for an F-150 and I THINK I can make it work with some minor mods but im not sure if its gonna hit the driveshaft or not. I'll just get one out of the junkyard and try it (cant hurt right).

I've been thinking about doing this exact thing.

the comment was made farther up about having two lines running between the two tanks. one for vent/vapor and one for fuel to travel through. would it really be that simple? I would probably put a check valve in the lower line to keep the the fuel from flowing out of the main tank on a hill. oh crap! then the other tank wouldn't fill up. hmmm....
