I am wondering if I can tow a Honda Accord 94-97 with a Ford Explorer 2002 with a V6 4.0L engine. It is 4wd. I am headed to Vancouver from Sacramento on
a 14 hour drive.

What are the tools I need and where do I buy them? It has a transmission cooler built in. Won't the explorer transmission get ruined if i tow?

A 14 hour drive towing an accord? Ehhh better install an extra trans cooler, and take lots of stops/drive slow.
Not sure what you mean by tools?

I wouldn't do it, personally. But yes if you even think about it you need a trans cooler and probably still need to take breaks..

Thank for the advice. I had a hunch that it seems like a dumb idea.

It's not a "dumb" idea, just not advisable if you have access to a larger truck to tow it. A F150 would be great.

The Honda accord weighs between 2880 and 3000 lbs. You would need a tow dolly and uhaul won't rent you one for the Explorer at least that is what I have been told. You probably have the smaller receiver also and I think that is rated for around 3500 lbs.

Tow bar will work too if the Accord is a manual transmission.

Here is the actual sticker from the small factory hitch:

If you have the factory 2inch hitch with 3:73 gears, then no problem, (other than uhaul not renting to Explorers but they will to Mountaineers...) I towed my 62 Corvair 350 miles on a flatbed uhaul autotransport with our 4.0 2010 Mounty. With 3:55 gears and the small hitch, forget it.

This is ridiculous. How can they rent to Mountaineers and not Explorers. Lol!!!

Uhaul is ridiculous.

UHaul is a total trash company and I will never rent from them.

Use a tow bar if the vehicle is compatible. I'm planning on getting one for my manual trans Ford Probe to be able to tow it behind my Explorer.

If you have a 3.73 and can somehow get a tow dolly I think that would be fine with the smaller hitch but for a full carrier you would need the 2" hitch. Tow bar would be fine with the smaller hitch too.

If you don't want to deal with swapping out the factory hitch to upgrade it you can always add this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00075XC8A below it.
