like the title says, im tryin to replace my CV joint on the drivers side and the haynes manual says that they can only be used once, but no one around here has them in stock. so im up the ganges without a bambo oar unless i can use the stupid thing again, someone tell me, IS THIS TRUE??
I used mine again when I did my CV. Didn't even think about not using it! But my new CV did come with a new nut. Which I still happen to have. Does it give any reasoning for not reusing?
Just make sure you use enough force. The reason it has such a high torque is to prevent the hub bearing from opening up. This hub just pressed together with a couple tons. I've used the old nuts over. The nut has that cupped washer that probably looses its stretch. I would just torque it toward the high end of the spec.
200-220ft/lbs. I've reused mine, mainly because the local Ford dealer only had one left and I didn't care much. I've checked and rechecked to make sure it doesn't back off because I've had the hub come apart on me driving down the road (before I realized that the spindle nut and half shafts were nessasary to hold the hub asseb. together). It's bad, don't let it come apart because once the spindle nut's off, all that's holding the hub together is the brake caliper (not that strong) and then your big ass 35 goes bouncing off into oncoming traffic as you skid to a stop. The good news is that the Explorer handles remarkably well on only 3 wheels for some odd reason or another.
So yes its safe, just make sure you use locktite and torque the hell out of it.
