1995 Ford Explorer Sport
Hi guys , I have a 1995 Ford Explorer Sport with 4.0 OHV and 4x4. I am in the point of reinstalling a valve body that is going to get the Transgo Shift kit(valve body update). I have also ordered a Sonnax Boost kit for increase line pressure but cannot decide if I should add this to the valve body. The reason for doing this is because someone rebuilt this trans not to long ago before we bought from the previous owner and the car has always shifted funny. The VB has a Transgo kit in already but the VB for the pressure valve has score marks, so I ordered the Sonnax kit 03k to repair this issue. Then after looking the unit over decided to get a VB from Cassadetrans( Electrical AdvantageInc). All my solenoids pass ohm test, including EPC,TCC. Gil at Transgo said that the kit from them is not calibrated for the Sonnax kit, but after reading several post here including Glacier991 it seems that they have been done. Maybe it is just that the kit I ordered from Sonnax is the higher pressure kit and not to OEM specs.I also found that the low/reverse servo spring is missing, is this some kind of additional trick?. What would be the pro's and con's of using a Sonnax Boost valve kit with higher line pressure and the Transgo Shift Kit together on a 4R55E valve body?.

I received a used valve body from Electrical Advantage Inc( Casscade Transmissions), and it has very low mileage and in excellent shape. It came with the updated version in valve body from ford with bonded gasket. I had to order a new plate with bonded gasket ( because this one was damaged in shipping by the time I received it.). I found one at amazon for the ford dealer In los vegas ( Gauidin Ford) for $40.00 shipped. It matched up to the plate that came on it. I installed the Sonnix 03K booster valve for higher line pressure. Installed missing low/reverse spring ( trans worked without it) and a new yellow intermediate piston spring, and a new green spring for the overdrive piston servo. A used wiring harness for solenoids( mine had 3 spots where the insulation was damaged and rubbing). The harness from Casscade Transmissions was excellent) he even sent extra springs for the servo's if I needed them. I had to put in 8 quarts to fill to proper level when warm, required 7 just to show on stick.Took car out for a test drive to HatchersPass 30% grade. The Pass is about 7 miles away and it is all up hill from there( total 10.5 to the top. The trans worked perfectly and shifted flawlessly. Coming down hill 30% grade trans worked very well...so far fuel econ is not what I wanted but there is only 3 items I have to replace ( maybe ) to have it get better. PCM is the original numbers and I am currently looking for updated PCM. MAF has been cleaned but still may be a problem. And TPS may be a slight problem?. Mileage has increased by 4 miles per gallon. Was at 10 now at 14 per gallon. Alaska fuel cost is .75 cents to $1.00 more per gallon and has been higher in the past...

Updated info...new computer BSA from old ARC to match valve body update. removed Sonnax 03k booster valve because of a variable shifting problem. Put in the Sonnax standard booster valve.I may remove the unit come spring and do the Transgo kit using the Sonnax 03K valve. The valve body has the Ford update blowoff valve and it does prevent the unit from blowing gaskets at the valve body. The bonded gaskets are the way to go beyond a doubt.New MAF, EGR solenoid,ICM. New TPS and 130 Alternator on the way.Check out my other post at the PCM voltage question I posted on 12/16/2015...A learning curve on that one.
