I just got stuck in the mud at the lake bottom a little while ago. When I got out I tried to get out of 4W low. I put it in neutral and put it back in auto 4x4, then put it in reverse and backed up a little bit, then put it back in drive. It never would shift out of 4W low. I tried it a couple more times and it still wouldn't. I don't live but a couple miles from the lake so I went ahead and drove home. I tried a few more times and never could get it out of 4 low. I looked up under it and the little motor on the transfer case looks fine, and all the wiring to it also.

So does anyone have any ideas? Think maybe it could be the motor on the transfer case gone bad? The switch? What would be the most common cause for this?

Thanks for the help!

I would try turning your ex off and then restarting and trying again. If that doesnt work tap the shift motor a couple of times with a hammer. If it then decides to shift you will then know you shift motor is bad or atleast on its last leg.

I tried turning it off and back on with no luck. In the morning I'll try tapping on the motor with a hammer and see what happens.

Edit: Anyone know the part number for the shift motor, and the cheapest place to buy?

Cheapest place i can think of is www.rockauto.com. Otherwise amazon and ebay are usually cheaper as well.

After I let it sit for a few hours I went out and started it and the light was off. I took it around the block and it was out of 4W low. It would be nice to have a manual transfer case. Do you guys think it would be smart to go ahead and replace the motor on the transfer case?
