I have a 2016 ford explorer police interceptor utility vehicle. It has 181,000 miles and in great condition. The issue I have is the rear catalytic converter went bad(clogged) and ford has none in stock nationwide due to a shortage of parts to actually build the catalytic converter. They have about 45 backordered with no ETA of shipping. So the car doesn't stay on, it starts but it "chokes out". I have no way of repairing it until the part arrives but like I said, no ETA on arrival of the part. I live in the great state of California and getting an aftermarket catalytic converter is illegal.

Would you be able to get one from an auto recycler?

Peter

No because it's illegal in California for them to sell to the public.

There are some aftermarket converters that are legal in California, thinking Maganflow has some, but they won't be cheap!! Is your Explorer an Eco- Boost??

Yes Ecoboost and I have been told they aren't C.A.R.B compliant.

That dealership in White Bear lake might have one my dealership even buys parts from them if we need something that's on back order.

Federal law prohibits the sale of used converters unless they are recertified. Most every junkyard I've gone to has a sign somewhere saying, WE DON'T SELL CONVERTERS. If it was my car, I'd just gut the clogged cat and replace when the new one comes in.

Same. Punch it out so you can at least drive the car. Turn off the rear O2 or live with the check engine light on until you install the new cat.

Hey what ever happened? Did the converter come back in stock? How long did it take? I’m waiting for one now and it’s been almost 2 months!
