Catalytic Converter . . .

Basically the engine doesn't have to run as hot as it was running with the kittens.

If you have a 96-up explorer and want to remove the cats or put in high flow cats, you need a chip that has the rear 02 bank turned off. Otherwise you will throw a check engine light within 20 minutes.

I don't throw O2 codes with my highflow cat.

Hey there guy's i been reading this trend and i have a 1997 explorer with the ohv 4.0. I have the bbk header's, Cat back system with the 40 series muffler the jet chip and the open air k&n Kit. My question is this i want to put the high flow cat on very soon but some of you are saying if i do that i will be getting a check engine light well i really don't want that light on giving me problems. But Alec you have the second gen system right with all the sensor and stuff and you say you got the high flow cat on do you have a chip and if you do what kind like i said above i have a chip the jet chip but i am not sure if it turn off the last sensor or not if you guy's or gal's know if the jet chip does please let me know thanks.

I really appreacite it

:redexp: i love my explorer she's the best all x are the best :D :D :D

Hey explorer97 how does your X sound with the 40 series. Is that delta flow or the orignal 2 chamber. I have a friend with a 88 Ranger 2.9. Has "GUTTED" cat and a 40 series with dual outlets. Sounds like a Baha truck when he lays into it. How does yours sound?

Boy, that's a long sentence!

Anyway, I have no computer mods directly relating to fooling the O2s. As long as the aftermarket cat is cleaning sufficiently, the O2s should act fine.

LoL sorry about that i just wanted to make sure that it was clearly said for ever one to understand it but hey thank's for the info i really apprecaite it i going to get my high flow cat put on and i am allso going to order the bbk 66mm throttle body.

Thanks agian,

Well to be honest it sound ok. It's got a deep tone to some time it's sounds like a v8 mostly when it's cold. I think what happen's is the cat start getting more restrictive when they get hotter and my x get a lot quieter. But i am pretty sure once i do my high flow cat it's going to get louder and sound more like your bud's ranger. The flow master 40's series that i am running is the 40 series original not the delta flow the delta flow is little quieter.

Thanx for the write back explorer97. For a sec the I thought you had forgotten about my little question.

I couldn't find a early EEC-V car to work with, but if you don't have o2 sensors behind the cats that means you don't have to worry about it. I thought it was all 96-up, but now that I think about it more, it could only be 99-up's. I'll try to do some more reserach on it tomorrow.

My '97 SOHC has 4 O2 sensors (2 before and 2 after the cats).

thanks, that saves me some time.

To answer the original question for explorer 97, you should get a CEL light. If you had no cats, you would definatly throw a code. You may not with high flows, the only way to find out is to try it

If you try it and you get the light, just sell your jet chip and I'll burn you one with the rear O2 Bank off :)

FYI, I have a 2000 F-150 and I replaced my cats with hi-flows. I couldn't find any shops in Colorado that would touch these, not because it is illegal but they are apparently all so scared about the POSSIBILITY of it being illegal that no one wanted to touch it. i ended up having it done while I was out in Las Vegas for the SEMA show. I don't agree with gutting them, but hi-flows are designed to have some of the same properties of your stock catalytic convertor, just allowing more air to pass through. With my setup, I was able to leave my o2 sensors where they were at so they are untouched, and I don't have any check engines or anything. I have 4 o2's, two upstream and two downstream. Here's pics!
