i'm more than likely going to get flamed for this thread by some enviromentalist or something, but by running a straight pipe and deleting the catalytic converters on my 4.0, will it affect the computer?, i mean the second o2 sensor will tell the computer that its running bad or something, but i figured that the second o2 would only send a message to the computer that the converters need to be changed....so it wouldnt affect the rest of the system. Any one ever tried deleting the converters or hollowing them out?

Yes your computer will spaz out. This could cause your truck to run like crap or not want to run at all. If it does run it'll either run extremely rich or too lean, either damaging your motor.

And getting rid of your cats will not increase performance. Besides everything else, it's illegal.

Thank you, I'm done

What about "high flow cats"?? Are they really as advertised??

Yes, most aftermarket high-flow cats will flow more than the stock units. However, Ford has tended to always have high flow cats from the factory. In most cases on Ford trucks, aftermarket cats will not increase performance. Like I said above, they may actually decrease low end torque because they flow too much.

If you're still running stock exhaust manifolds you can get away with aftermarket cats and hopefully not lose torque and maybe actually gain a little hp. With aftermarket headers, high flow cat, and catback exhaust your exhaust will be too open for a naturally aspirated motor and you'll need a restrictor pipe to slow down flow and also resonators to keep the exhaust from sounding like a lawnmower.

thanks alec, but tell me this, why is there two o2 sensors, the first one which is before the converters, obviously tells the computer how to manage the fuel/air, and the second one which is behind the converters. I doubt the second one manages the fuel/air......ok.....look at it this way, when the car is new, the converters are clean and less restrictive, as it gets old, they start to build up carbon and become more restrictive, so your telling me that the second o2 tells the computer to put more/less air/fuel in the engine as it gets older?...to me it makes no sense, i think i am going to experiment cause it needs new cats anyways.....and taking off the cats is illegal of course, but they dont do inspections in GA, and about the horsepower, your telling me that a less restrictive exhaust doesnt give you more power?, i know that if you dont have enought back pressure you will lose torque, but i highly doubt that taking off the cats will cause it to lose torque, after all i want more horsepower, i am willing to sacrifice low end torque, for higher end power, unless you know someone that has done this and you know for a fact that it will mess up the message sent to the computer, besides telling it that the cats are in need of replacing, tell me, otherwise i might have to experiment......i'm not trying to sound like a smart a$$, just doesnt make sense to me

The post-cat O2 tells the computer how efficiently the cats are working. If it senses too much "crap" in the exhaust the computer will try to make the exhaust hotter to light off the cats again. To do this it will probably lean out the motor and cause damage.

If you know your cats are bad then get an aftermarket one. Like I said above, with the stock exhaust manifolds you shouldn't lose too much low-end.

are you 100% sure that it will tell the computer that?

Not 100%, but I do know that Lightning and Mustang guys have problems unless they fool the O2s.

well i think i am going to expirement, cause as i said before, the cats need replacing anyways, and if it doesnt work, no loss, i'll just put new ones on

You'll only need one aftermarket one as a replacement, and it's usually $400-500.

well i can get a universal highflow and do the work myself, dont worry i'll do my home work first

well you know, i was thinking, i dont want to invest time and money in the 4.0. The ohv motor is such a slug, i mean 160 h.p and to get maybe 20 hp you gotta spend like $500, just not worth it, i'm just going to put a forged pistoned 5.0 out of a late 80's stang in it, with the AOD, shoot a 100 shot and call it quits and get out cheap with way more power

:D
