I just installed a cb, and it has a lot of static, or back ground buzz in it whenever the engine is running, anyone have any suggestions on how eliminate the noise?

Where did you mount the attenna? It has to be in a certain place or it won't work right. And did the check the RF waves (I think that is what they are called). I have a meter the checks the height and signal to make sure everything is ok.

Its mounted passenger side, just behind the seat, its a through glass mount antenna, and i have checked with other cbs, and it didnt have the buzz. I wasnt sure if i wired it wrong or what?

There are several things that could be done to better the performance. First off..get a new antenna. I have never heard good things about the glass antennas. A killer CB mixed with a poor antenna is never a good mix. The results will not be there.

Next off....move the antenna as far from the gas tank as you can. The explorer's fuel pump is famous for putting out noise that the antenna will pick up. You more or less mounted the antenna right next to one of the main causes of the noise on the explorer.

Lastly....get it tuned. They will adjust the antenna to get as little noise as possible. You will always get some noise with the squlech turned up all the way, but with it tuned it will be min. Radio Shack or a CB store can do this for about 5 bucks or so.

You may want to get this moved to the Ham Radio forum. You'll get a better responce. If you wish for me to do so just yell. :)

Also, make sure it is ground properly.

I got an inline RFI filter from Radio Shack and it works very well. It just installs inline on your power wire. Cost about $20.

mount a good antenna like firestick or wilson like leebo has his. i have a 4 foot firestick and have been too lazy to tune it but i have a 3-4 mile range in the city. it is mounted in the middle of the front roof rack crossbar like leebo's. also i noticed you have an early explorer, these have the dreaded crappy, noisy fuel pump and some of that cant be fixed no matter what unless you can get ahold of the discontinued ford pump filter. i have only HEARD bad things about the glass mount antennas. and use an rfi filter like yob_yeknom. and get your antenna tuned.

Thank you for everyones input, I kinda figured I would have to ditch the antenna I have.

Where did you get the power from? Run power lines directly from the battery for CB and Ham installation. Bring the wires into the passenger area from the small hole under the driver's size firewall. You will notice this will cut down on the noise you are hearing.

Also, get rid of that crummy glass mounted antenna. In CB installations where you have limited RF output power, the antenna is the most important part of the system. Don't skimp on it.

before you do that.....try this. Go ahead and remount the antenna somewhere else. BlueDogBandet had one at Truckhaven that supprised us how well it worked. Try to mount it as far from the fuel tank as you can. After that go and get it tuned. Just pay the 5-10 bucks and get it done by somebody. Also try to keep the antenna as close to the middle of the truck as you can. It's kinda hard to do with the glass mount, but you can do it. Try to hook up the antenna in several different places to see where you can get the least amount of noise. If all this doesn't work......get a new antenna. I myself do not use the wilson(although I have before) but use a firestick. I love it and will use it again. There's not much difference between the two so if you do change use whatever you can find.
