Good morning and Happy New Year everyone.

Re: front driveshaft assy for 2000 Mountaineer

After three failed Dorman CV joints on my original 412,000 mile front driveshaft, it's time for a different plan. Can't find a driveshaft shop in CT that'll weld and balance Rock Auto's Spicer CV joint. So I'm looking at complete assys (new DS, new UJ, new CV joint) from CCI Driveline and USA Standard.

CCI lists the correct DS assy for $415. When I called for more info the guy I talked to was a bit sketchy. Said the price was more like $600 than the listed $415. Said he hadn't had time to update the website. He also said there was no warranty, per se. Said if it goes bad to send it in and we'd 'discuss' what to do.

He spent some time saying, and correctly, I think, that if my T-case was a viscous coupling type ... and if I'd been driving without a front DS for a while ... that installing a front DS after all that time can damage the T-case. I think but I'm not positive I've heard that before but only for the 5.0 motor/T-case. I have a 4.0 SOHC and before I removed the front DS I researched it pretty well here and the overwhelming consensous was driving a 4.0 SOHC w/out front DS will not damage the T-case. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Haven't talked to USA Standard. The jeep forums say USA Standard uses gears, etc that "didn't meet Yukon's QC". As a 30 year multi-axis CNC programmer/operator/floor sweeper, that sounds, uh, weird. Even so, I found no bad reports on USA Standard. Their price for what I need is about $515.

Appreciate any info/experience with these two outfits, and any other outfits worthy of trust and my money.

Thanks, all.

Yes your right, nothing will happen to your transfer case BW4405 without driveshaft, no DTC's.
It is almost the rubber boot that will crack, dirt gets into the CV joint which cause massive wear
and some vibration.
Some shops have problems to balance the CV shaft, in europe too.
If you use good parts like spicer, the repair should last for a longer time.
Unfortunately the rubber boot will fail again, maybe this fit

Think we must life with this.

Wish you were closer to Norfolk, VA. Local shop had the adapters to do mine.

As mentioned, no viscous coupling in your TC.

Today another broken boot, CV joint parts (cage/balls) fallen out, scrap.
