I have a six disc cd changer in my x and when i play certain cds not just recordable..but regular ones as well i get this loud distortion sound does anybody no what that is or how i can fix it..Also i wanted to get an in dash cd player like a clarion or something..and the guys at ford told me you couldn't get one of those put in my make and model...they said it would cost like an extra 600 bucks does anyone have an in dash in thier limited or know why they would tell me that?

i had the same loud distortion but only when i played my own burned cds... it only happened because i used winamp to convert from mp3 to wav.. and adaptec to burn the wav to cd.. but after using adaptec to both convert and burn the cds, i didnt get any distortions

Distributed Architechture Audio System

The reason they told you it would be difficult (= expensive) to put a single CD in your X is due to the unique "distributed architecture" of the Ford/JBL system used in 1995 thru 1997 models. The "head unit" is not really a head unit, it's merely a media box - the amplifier and tuner are in the RR quarter (see the "Quick Reference" forum for more details). There are no single CD units compatible with this system. To change it, you need to replace everything.

A lot of guys on this forum DO change everything, so, it's not impossible, it's just that there is no quick and simple fix, like a head swap, that will work in this case.

You can use a harness to hook up power, grd, etc but you will need to run run 4 pairs of spkr wire to the back right panel and hook up direct to the spkr output wires off the amp. Here again you can use the amp bypass harness just cut it in half and connect 4 prs of wires and plug in to factory harness .
Now to receive radio you must unplug the antenna and run it back to the front , find a ford antenna adapter and run it up to your new aftermarket deck.
The only thing I have yet to find is which wire is the power antenna trigger...any one know which it is???
