My 98 Explorer has some sort of cd/tape player problem. The radio will work, but there is no display and both the cd and tape player are inoperative. This is the second time this has occurred. Ford replaced the entire unit the first time and I've had it less than a year. Has anyone else run into this problem? I'm thinking of switching to an aftermarket unit if this is a reoccurring problem.

I have the same head unit as you and have had no problems with it. Actually I really like the way it is laid out. You might want to put this in the Audio section. More people will respond to it.

I'm having possibly similiar problems with the dual media stereo in my '98 XLT. Started a couple weeks ago. The stereo is possessed. Sometimes it will turn on and off by itself, some buttons will work and others won't and other times, it works fine. The clock always works so the unit is getting power. It hasn't become consistent enough to take it to the dealer but it's definitely getting worse. Any ideas?

Apparently these is a TSB out about this problem. The solution is to disconnect the system (you'll need the radio removal tool)and let the unit sit for a few minute. It then resets itself and should operate fine. I did this, waited 20 minutes and now the system is fine. Strange...

Radio Display

Hey Bob and Roadkill-
You can add my name to the growing list of radio displays going out. I've got a stock 98 Sport, 4x4, and display went out one month after factory warranty expired (Story of my life??). When you mentioned taking the radio out and letting it cool down, I removed mine to check out the connections on the circuit board on the face plate, they all seemed good and after reinstalling it, display STILL didn't work.
I've see a lot of threads related to the display going out, and it usually appears to be a heat related problem. I can vouch for that living out here in the desert.
So just wanted to add my 2 cents worth....
Y'all take care now !!
Robert
