My 1998 Ranger 4x4 with 4.0 engine with 103,000 miles just got the dreaded 0420 CEL code. My mechanic showed me on his scanner that it appears that the problem is not the 02 sensors, but the expensive catalytic converter. He said we could try replacing both front (upstream) 02 sensors to see if that will make the check engine light go off. But in his opinion by looking at the graphs of both front sensors and rear sensor on his scanner, he thinks the converter will have to be replaced. He also advised to check local parts stores and online to find a cheaper converter than the $650 converter from Ford dealer -he said most aftermarket converters have 2 yr/24,000 mile warranty. I don't know how long I will hold onto this truck -had it since new. Has anyone been told coverter is the problem with 0420 code and turned out that 02 sensors fixed the problem? I also need to find a fix for the airbag light that has stayed on for months and need to replace ball joints now that I put 4 new tires on it. I paid $1,000 to replace the catalytic converter and 02 sensors on my 2001 I30plus $2,000 on other repairs about 2 years ago and then totalled it 6 months later. I know that's life, but....
