does anyone know what the clutch fan for the cooling system is rated at on the 91-94 explorers? I want to convert over to an electric fan setup as opposed to a clutch fan.

Also, is the thermostat supposed to be 210 or 190 degrees?

Oh and while I'm talking about the cooling system. I swapped in a new engine over the weekend replacing all the cooling components w.pump/thermo/lines/etc. Car will run right under the N on normal at idle and driving but during highway speeds and slowing speeds (such as offramp or traffic jams) It will quickly go from the N to the M then right back down to the N again.

The way it acts only thing I can think of to explain it is the brand new thermostat is closing and then re-opening for some reason. Anyone else's truck do this??

Mine did that when my intake manifold gaskets started to seap at the water jackets.

I believe my '93 takes a 190* thermostat. Another thing to look at is the direction of the thermostat. I believe the little hole in the thermostat has to face the back of the engine. I'm sure someone can correct me on that if it's wrong.

The spring should be towards the back of the engine. Stock temp is 195. (I just replaced mine.)

In hot weather, mine will also go up in temperature momentarily when I come to a stop and then go back down. When you are moving the air from the vehicle's motion is doing the cooling, but when you come to a stop, the system has to heat up enough for the fan clutch to kick in. When the clutch kicks in, it quickly brings the temp back down to the N. See if you can hear the fan.

If the temp is going up too much, and you know the thermostat is good, then the fan clutch may be malfunctioning and engaging too late-- but what you have described seems normal to me.
