Change electric to manual transfercase???

Ive been having problems with my 98 sport and recently it got stuck in 4low it didnt matter what i did it just sat in low....which isnt very helpful. So I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to change that electric junk to a manual shift setup so I didnt have to mess around with "just a flick of the switch that never works" I guess I was trying to think of a way to make a linkage that connects where the motor does now that would work, but I was hoping someone might have an actual idea about it.

He's not asking about swapping in a manual transfer case, he's asking about CONVERTING his 44-05 to a manual case. The answer to that question is, no, it's yes and no. The 44-05 was never offered as anything other than an electric shift. I suspect that, with some creative linkage fabrication, it may be possible to convert it, but I don't know that anyone's ever tried it. The linkage would also need to HOLD the transfer case gear set in place, not just rotate the shaft, and I'm not sure exactly how that would be done.

Now, to convert it to a manual case, the 13-45 is a decent bolt-in alternative. Personally, I like mine the way it is.

Have to ask.... when trying to shift back to high, were you stopped, in neutral, with your foot on the brakes?

Yeah I was stopped and everything, I tore the motor off and cleaned up some connections then I manually put a power supply to it while it was off to get it back to high and I havnt tried to put it in low yet. Im going to try that "brown wire" mod today and then if that seems to work I think Ill try the low again but I really dont want to have to pull that thing off again. Thanks for responce though

Your transfer case can't be converted to a fully manual transfer case w/o doing a lot of modification. And when I say manual, I'm talking about a purely mechanical system - no electricity.

The reason is that when you switch from Auto mode to 4HI, the motor doesnt really turn or move. Switching from Auto to 4HI powers up the ever popular "brown wire" which engages a set of clutches via an electromagnet.

So per say, unless you machineed the top of the transfer case open and made some assembly to "squish" the clutch pack manually, you will always need some sort of electrical wiring to do the "squishing" for you.

Indeed, right after my last post, I thought about the lock-up portion.... I think you could convert the shifter to shift in and out of low range, but yes, with the 44-05, you'd still need electronics to control the transfer case clutch coil.
