hi I am wondering if when changing the head gaskets on a 00 explorer 4lt ohc how do you handle the timing chains , do you take them off the cam and tie them up so they will not fall then remove the head over them ?? i would appreciate some advice on this , I have replaced the head on a ford courier with over head cam is it similar , thank you pedro

tie the chains

Remove the hydraulic/spring tensioner
Remove the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt
Separate the sprocket from the chain and tie the chain sides together with cable ties or strong rubber bands making sure the ties won't slip on the oiled chains.
Lift the head while guiding the chain (having two people really helps)

What 2000StreetRod said plus- It's always a good idea to start with number 1 piston at top dead centre. It makes it easier to be sure it all goes back together properly.

And there's an odd looking torx bolt at the front of the head that holds the cassette in place that has to come out too.

As well as the big head bolts there's 2 small torx bolts on either side of the timing chain that have to come out.
