Couple of questions because I want to do this right. Any recommendations on what plugs and wires to use? Or what to absolutely not use? So far I've heard great things about Magnecor Explorer KV85 8.5mm wires. They are $76.25 and I've heard you don't have to change them every time. The plugs I'm not sure about because I've seen a lot of different recommendations. I vaguely remember changing the plugs but it was years ago. Luckily I don't drive it that much but it has started to sputter a little and idle kinda rough.

Also, in the under the hood section I saw some people raving about the Screamin' Demon Coil Pack 4.0L. Most of the ones I see talking about it are in newer Explorers. Just curious if anybody in the first generation has tried it.

Many guys on this forum have strong opinions about plugs and wires based on one horrendous experience or another. However, before I knew this, I had been buying the run of the mill plugs and wires from AZ, I think the plugs were AC/Delco and the wires were in a black box. Just cheap stuff, with no problems that I can tell. HOWEVER, I only drive on streets and it never rains here.

For plug wires there is no doubt that the Magnecor wires are the best.

As far as plugs go, I recommend sticking with Motorcraft plugs.

Good luck ....

this is the combination i have used on my explorer

Thats the combination I was leaning towards. It will probably be a week or two before I do this. Hopefully someone will know more about that Screamin' Demon thing and post about.

On a side note, I used some clay bar stuff and got out a scratch on my driver's door that has been bugging me for about a year!

you can get the screamin deamon coil pack through www.stuffforyourranger.com

it is a good unit, it is on my proposed list of mods when i get the $ for it. aldive has been testing it and has great results

i ordered my magnecors through www.horsepowerfreaks.com their price was the cheapest i found anywhere, less than $90 shipped for my 96 OHV V6

Aldive, can you tell us more....

about your thoughts on the Screamin' Demon. I am always looking to get better performance and am very interested in your results.

you can read his thread, he has gone into great detail about all of his modifications, look for something like aldives mileage monster or my quest for 30

I shall have some milega test data available toward the end of next week.

Do these hot coils add to reliability or are the gains in gas mileage or horsepower?

Thanks Jimbo....

and to everyone else that contributes to this forum. I have learned a great deal from you folks.

Hm, most folks look to aftermarket coils to deliver a better current, not a longer duration spark.
- I installed magnecors on a '87 924S I used to have. Good quality wire, but I don't know that I'd expect performance gains beyond stock. There are a lot of pro- and anti- threads on the web for folks to read. Had Aurura wires on a VR4 and liked those, also installed the Hotwires on a 928S, they were crap.
- I have used a bunch of different igntion products- the Jacobs Mileage Master delivered good results on the 928, a little more reponsive and slightly better mileage. Had an MSD Off-Road in a Cherokee- slightly quicker starts, but the unit toasted itself and the factory ECU..Had a high performance coil on the Cherokee too, to no real effect.

I think I'm goign with the JBA wires. I would install the demon coils if mine failed, but not likely to spend the money otherwise.

smtcapecod's comments are why I was wondering about just how good these things really are. Like I said above, the stock or normal aftermarket ones seem to work for me. A slightly better mileage (one half MPG?) at a several hundred dollar cost doesn't seem to be worth it.

i just replaced my plugs and wires recently, i live in michigan we get quite a bit of rain and snow. im running autolite professional XL 8.5mm wire and autolite iridium plugs and i have never had more throttle response and quick revving from this old of a vehicle i highly recommend them there may be better out there but the wires were worth the $45 the plugs are a lil pricy at $15 a piece

I wouldn't say the Screamin' Demons are more reliable that a stock coil pack.
At least, I know with Mustangs, the stock coil packs are much more reliable than the SD, MSD, or Accel coil packs.

SD coils are mostly for a performance gain. IMO, anyway
