My main concern is wheel hop in the sand. My 95 RWD 5 spd has LSD but not much traction, suspect my 2011 FWD Escape will go farther before losing traction. I'm running 275/65-18's on the back, 255/70-18's on the front. Not a lot of tread left on the Yokohama Geolander A/T's, so THAT could be my main problem. Is there an easy way to check out the effectiveness of the LSD? I've read that they aren't very effective when new.
Also, is there any way to get some extra horsepower out of the plain Jane 4.0? Headers? Muffler or muffler delete? Obviously, I need to install a 4.10 ring and pinion to get back the acceleration I lost with the much taller tires. Does anyone know of a good one that's not going to cost an arm and a leg? I would naturally rebuild the LSD at the same time if I go that route. I did the math and now I have the equivalent of a 3.37 R & P with stock height tires! Certainly not great on the clutch but pretty low rpms at 75.
