Wife called me today saying that the car passed smog. Its a 98 Explored Eddie 4x4 w/ the big 6. Then later in the day she called telling me that the car is running very rough at a stop light. She tried to rev it and then the check engine light came on! The engine has 127k on it. Just changed the plugs. O2 sensor has never been changed, Is there a way to check the error codes from the center cousel? Is there a self diag's test I could have the car computer run. She is at her parents home 120 miles away so I can't look at it. My thoughts are...02 sensor, PCV valve or vaccum leak. She said that after it cooled down she started it and it seemed fine. 02 sensor do not kick in until the cat's are hot right? Also said smelled like something was burning? But I know my wife there was no burning smell.

First off both the 6's are the same size, 4.0L. One is OHV and the newer one is SOHC.

Only way to get the codes is with an OBD II scanner. Autozone will pull the codes for free.

wihout the code it's crapshoot. But vacuum is high on MY suspect list. Ask her if, with the hood open she hears a "hissing" kind of noise.

the engines in explorers hiss anyways... im thinking they possibly nkocked something loose like vacuum... also the cl could trigger due to maf inoperaition

Well, a missing vacuum line is an unmistakeable LOUD hiss on a stumbling engine idle.
