Check engine light flashes when given gas and it putts

Can anyone help me with some ideas. I was on a trip on my way home and all of a sudden my light starts flashing when I give it gas especially when going up hill. The car shakes and putting sounds like its starving for airor something. What could it all be and where do I start. Will they be able to read codes if the light won't stay on?

Typically, a flashing Check Engine light means the O2 sensors are seeing massive amounts of unburnt fuel in the exhaust with the potential of damaging the catalytic converters.

From your description, most likely cause are the spark plugs are starting to mis-fire but the wires or the coil pack(s) could be the problem.
