Check Engine light is on AGAIN!!!!

I have a 2001 Explorer Sport 4X4 w/ almost 100K on it. I bought used, when I got it worked just fine. After about a year the check engine light came on and we replaced PFE sensor, the check engine light went off for about 6 months then came back on.
Since then my gas mileage has dropped horribly city driving a full tank of gas will last maybe 3 days aprox. 12-13mpg (this is what my dad gets on his conversion van) when I should be getting 16-17mpg. On my last explorer (97 all the time 4x4) I got 18 mpg. So I know something is not right here.

A friend of mine and myself changed the fuel filter and again the light went off but only for a day. I know that it could be the o2 sensors but it has got (now that the fuel filter has been changed) a whining sound and the gas milage has dropped even worse.

Oh and another moderator that suggested that I post here said something about 0012 recall Any Ideas?

I need to fix this before spring. Please can anyone help?

Have the code read so we will know what has to be repaired. Codes eliminate guess work.

I did have the code read. It said banks 1 & 2 running lean.

It is probably your intake manifold gaskets leaking, allowing unmetered air to enter the combustion chamber creating a lean condition. Its a fairly common problem- I will find you a link
