OK...I'M NEW TO THIS SITE AND IT SEEMS I'M ALSO VERY FAR BEHIND IN THE KNOWLEDGE AREA OF ENGINES ETC ETC.
I HAVE A 1994 XLT AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF WITH NO REGULARITY. SOMETIMES IT COMES ON AND STAYS ON FOR MILES AND THEN IT WON'T COME ON FOR DAYS.
OTHER TIMES IT GOES ON AND OFF AND THEN STAYS ON.
CAN SOMEBODY GIVE ME AN IDEA OF WHAT THIS MAY MEAN? I DON'T HAVE ANY OF THE HIGH TECH TOOLS LIKE A READER ETC...

On a '94, which uses OBD-1 diagnostics, you only need a volt meter and a jumper wire to access the computer's trouble codes and see why the check engine light is coming on. You'll want a manual to get the details of how to run the test. Along those lines, one of the big dissappointments in my Chilton manual is the lack of a diagram of how to wire the self-test. The verbal description is there, but without a diagram of the ALDL connector and which pins to jump, I needed to refer to my BII's Haynes manual to set up the test.
