since i bought my 97 xlt new...it had been giving me problems. im pretty sure there was about 15-20 recalls in the 1st year alone. I added a flowmaster dual exhaust which made it run a bit better...then added a MAC cold air intake...which for the most part worked great.....

Last wednesday as i was driving home from work...i was making a right turn and my car stalled...1st time that happened....so i put it in Neutral and rolled to a stop. it wouldnt turn on...so i called a tow truck..they added gas (maybe ur gas guage isnt working) , then tried to start it...the guy said it was the Timing chain.

so he takes it to a mechanic (a friend of my dad's) and he does tests on it....turned out i needed to change the fuel pump cuz it wasnt working...once they changed that, they tried to start the car and it still didnt stat...mind you replacing the fuel pump with labor was $423.50...

so they did more tests and saw that the timing chain was loose....so they needed to get another..long story short...THAT wasnt the only problem and i need a new engine...so theyre gonna put a 2000 explorer engine..and its gonna cost me $2300 of what i dont have....anybody else have a similar problem?

the X is pretty dirty..maybe a canal would clean it up..hehe....

YIKES! I changed my fuel pump for $100. Did they tell you why you need a new engine, did you break your crank shaft and crack the block. Or when the timming chain went all your valves smashed into the pistons? If not those two issues then why would you need to replace it? Sorry your having such bad luck with your truck.:(

Only thing I can think of was you ran it too lean and detonated or that when the timing chain broke, the valves ate the pistons... This happened on a friends' Acura, never a good thing.... sorry to hear your misfortune

HMM...lets see.The tow truck guy added gas so...your statement that "it wouldnt turn on" actually means it would turn over but wouldnt start. The tow truck driver adding gas substantiates this hypothesisas does the mechanic replacing the fuel pump. When exhaust sensors go bad ,,,fuel pumps stop working.(to encourage you to continue emiting good unbreathable emitions). The timing chain was loose......ahem ahem,,,,Timing chains dont stretch all at once to the point of an inoperative condition.(Unless you suck a valve or got one of them faulty rubber ones..........no....theres no rubber ones).3 things you check first.#1 compression, should be fine unless you accidently drove into outer space.#2 gasoline,cmon...dig behind the seat for one of the many mcdonalds cups you store back there and put a little gas down the intake and crank on it......if it starts you have a fuel problem.Does the fuel pump have a fuse in the fuse panel? Is the filter plugged? No.#3, spark:pull a plug wire and lay it on the intake or whatever protrusion of metal is handy(a ground source),turn engine over and observe a lightining bolt shooting out the wire.If it dont....the ignition system is gunnybag. An engine just dyeing is usually the result of the lack of: fuel, spark,or cataclismic faulure.Which is it?....keep in touch:)
