Checking front hubs & which tranny fits 92

1992 4dr automatic Explorer, I need some tips or a technical article on how to verify proper of my automatic hubs. When engaged I get a popping noise from the driver side front. Also I beleive my automatic transmission is on its last leg, what year explorers, rangers, bronco 2's or other vehicles will fit.

when is it popping sound heard, as you drive or when you first turn on 4x4. If it's at first its just your hubs locking in. If it's while you drive you might have a hub going out. If that's the case you may as well upgrade to some manual hubs. They aren't that bad in price and they are a simple install.
