i have a k&n filter... flowmaster delta 40 series 2.5" cat back exhaust and am going to add a chip customized to work with my mods if at all possible. i have 4.56 gears i really needed 4.88's. my question is will the chip, exhaust and filter help power the way 4.88's would with out any performance mods? or atleast get it close....?

By all means go with a chip or preferably a SCR Microtuner.

Good luck .....

the SCR microtuner... $400 is getting a lil pricey. i really don't have alot of $$$ and was thinking $300 max. if i remember correctly a chip would be $200 to $250 or something. the microtuner would be more $$$, is the difference between the chip and the microtuner enough to spend the extra $$$ on that instead of the chip? edit: actually they are offering a 15% instant rebate... so its $341 w/ free shipping. now i jus need to know the difference between that and the chip.

well..... i made up my mind and i'm getting the microtuner for my x. i'll be ordering today. going to see if i can find any place that will beat $341. more than i wanted to spend but whatever.

they don't make a csr microtuner for my 98 ohv! :( that sux whats my next best bet? all this talk about how a programmer is better than a chip and now i want a damn programmer. i could get a hypertech or whatever but it costs more... i'm going to do a lil more research. anyone have any ideas throw'em out i'm listening and waiting, thanks

You can get a SCT Mictotuner for your OBD II Ford.

Don't mean to steal your thread here but hiridin, question about your gears, your not happy with the 4.56's and 35's? I'am getting ready to install 35's and wasn't sure between the 4.56's and 4.88's?

Aldive is right. You just need to IM either Doug or Wayne. You are better off getting a flasher from one of these two as they do custom tunes that are far superior to the cookie cutter basic programs.

I Love my flasher form HypIllAuto (Wayne). You can get a computer cable to tweak the program if you desire to at a later time. Its getting pretty cool. Way better than a chip.

jus got off the phone with hypertech and they don't even offer a programmer for my explorer they stopped doing 4.0's in 97. what the hell!? so are there any other programmers out there? superchips doesn't offer one, hypertech doesn't offer one and either i'm too pi$$ed :fire: to remember any others or there isn't any. does this mean i'm back to getting a chip?

does this mean i'm back to getting a chip?

Instant Message HypIllAuto for details. He can program you one.

SCT offers Microtuners for OND II Fords. Contact one of the dealers mentioned above.

And so can our other dealer sponsor. That is Doug at bamaChips.

explorersportnu do u have a manual or automatic? i would say 4.88's if its a manual and 4.56's if its a automatic (i guess). i really think 4.88's would be best but dunno how that'll do on mileage and all. i don't really think it would hurt it much. mine is a pain in the a$$ to play in the mud 1st gear won't spin'em fast enough to clean them and by the time i switch from 1st to 2nd i lose too much power to go through it and i have to go right back to first. i gotta be flying along to go through the mud in 2nd. i wish i had 4.88's.

and thanks ya'll  i'll get in touch with them and see what i can do.

so from talking to wayne and reading up a lil on it. its going to cost me about $350 to gain a good 10 hp... would i even notice the difference? is the improvement more than it sounds like it would be? maybe since these engines are so underpowered that 10hp more would be noticeable. i have the option of a lil more hp if i run 92/93 octane or whatever. and i could have the option to do either but i mean that would suck pretty bad to do all that and then not be able to tell i did it except for it idling better and maybe 1 mpg more. or is that about it for these engines short of a supercharger and headers and ect...?

I dont know about the OHV motor but I got a V8 with the 87 octane program for performance and mpg. The performance gain is noticeable but the most important gain was the shifting. Much nicer now. 350 was more than I wanted to spend too but its worth it if you ask me.

There is little HP gain with an 87 tune, however, with an auto tranny, the shifts will be vastly improved. If you want real performance, opt for a 93 octane tune. If you drive in a normal manner, the mileage will definitely be better.

I think it is a very worth wile investment.

You will get what you pay for, with the new download programs you can tweke for limiters and tire size changes.
For the home mechanic, without sophisticated diagnostics, do not fiddle fart around with shift points, A/F ratios etc, best left to the people that know how IMO

well i jus sent him the $$$ i'm getting the flasher. it'll have two options to choose from. one for 87 octane and one for 93 octane. ofcourse he said the 93 octane will be a much better improvement. at first i didn't want to mess with that really. but the more i think about it i might as well do the 93 octane all the time with the option of 87 if for some reason im that short on cash. i have to get back in touch with him to find out about how long it'll take to get but i'm on my way to getting it. :D
