I have a stock 97 4.0ltr auto sohc with standard exhaust system fitted.I want more noise ,not too loud ,just 4.0 ltr grunt
I was thinking of cutting out the end box (the one that goes over the rear axle) and putting in a straight throug pipe
Has anybody else done this ,and does it sound good .

Yes, you can cut the resonator after the muffler off. If you're already doing that, I recommend getting a good aftermarket muffler and 2.5" tailpipe. It will sound even better then and also give you some hp. You will also make the truck sound and perform better with a performance intake such as the one at www.kustomz.com

Thankyou, all i have to do is find somebody in the UK who can supply the parts as shipping from the states is costly,
Do you think it would be ok if i just chop out the rear box until i can source a supplier. You call it a resonater does that mean the noise will be felt inside like a vibration. I do alot of higway driving and i dont want too much cabin noise

cutting off the resonator wont make it a lot louder in the cabin, maybe slightly, but not too much....

What he said... as for finding a new muffler, and airfilter.... ya should be able to conact companies here, and get a rough shipping quote...

Thanks , I will get the cutting gear out tonight

just FYI, i cut the resonator off of my V8 before i had my exhaust done, and i couldnt even tell a difference. it wasnt really any louder inside or outside the vehicle.

james, you say it made no difference, what about the big middle box , did you try that

That's your muffler. Don't cut that out unless you want to sound like a 20 foot angry bumble bee ;)

yes, you can cut off the big middle box, however you need to replace it with a qualitly high flow muffler. as Alec said, that is the actual muffler, and without it your truck will be extremely loud. and not in a good way, either.;)

Thanks, I will cut out the rear box & if its not made much difference i will source a replacement middle box,If that doesnt do the job i will trade up for a V8 5.0LTR

Um, don't trade in your truck just because you don't like the exhaust sound ;)

A Flowmaster or Magnaflow muffler will most likely give you the sound you're looking for as long as you match it correctly with your truck.

I was joking ,I just want the worble of a v8 and not the sound of a pinto with a hole in the manifold

can we stop with all this whoooo whoooo stuuff now? it was funny for a short time for the past few weeks, but it is just annoying now.......

I agree, I deleted most of them.
