I have a 1996 Explorer Eddie Bauer. I was using the lighter the other day and the thing got stuck in the heating up position. After about a minute i could smell a burning smell. The cigarette lighter, needless to say, does not work any more. Would this most likely be the fuse or do i need a new lighter. The actual lighter part that u remove is actually partly melted. Where can i find a replacement and around how much? Thanx

You obviously need a new lighter element. They are only a few dollars and can be found at most auto supply stores...Auto Zone, Checker, etc.
Just take the old one in so you can make sure they match up. The heating elements do go bad, so replacements are common.
Better check the socket since you had a severe heating episode! You could have some slight damage to that too since your original lighter did get stuck in there. If the socket is ok, then a new lighter should do the trick. I would definitely check the fuse just to be sure.

Some of the lighters from Ford now make you buy the whole thing and not just the element. See if you can take it apart. I couldn't take mine apart as it was one piece,

By the way did any body ever notice the owners manual calls is a Cigar lighter and not a cigarette ?

I would buy the whole thing. The body is probably the cause of it sticking. They do come apart and its not a hard job to change one.

Thanks for the replies ... but i dont know what i should be doing to check it. How can i get the console open and then how would i install a new one? Thanx for any help
