hey guys its my first post, i just got a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer 4.0L 2wd and ive noticed that the lighter port and the power port stay ON all the time. The other night i had my gps plugged in and when i turned the car off, the unit stayed on and would not go off. I tried getting out and locking the doors to see if it would put it in a sleep mode and waited for the lights to go out but the power ports never did. is this common or is there something messed up?

I think that's so you can have a smoke without taking out your keys... :-)

That's how it is in my 2001 too. The Hyunday Sonata (one of my other cars), turns off that port.

BTW, the port for cigarette lighter is different from the side one. I plugged in a 5V adaptor in it and managed to make a short circuit. As opposed to the Garmin power that has the springs futher back and does not short the cigrarette port.

They don't turn off, that is why I hardwired my GPS wire in to the stereo, so it would shut off with the truck.

Yes and all I can say is thank you Ford. I can't stand all the new vehicles that turn them off. Try charging a cell phone if you can't find your home charger, in a vehicle that has to run to have the cigarette lighter on.
