My 1991 x is making that signature valve clatter noise. How big of a pain in the a** is it to go in and fix? Is it possible it could be carbon knock? I've heard some people say that once they sea foamed it, the noise stopped. Maybe add some MMO. Any ideas?

I would be sure it's valve clatter before I tear into it. Let's just say it's only easy if you know what you're doing.

Ping (carbon knock) will sound different and probably not as consistent as valve clatter. Clean your MAF, that can help end ping. Unless the MAF is bad. Some say running premium gas helps too. Try a tank if MAF cleaning doesn't work.

Valve clatter should go away when warm, at least when it's just starting to wear. Eventually it will clatter all the time but that takes a while.

This is valvetrain noise:

Consistent but changes with RPM, quiets down gradually as it warms up.

Just watched the YouTube vid. Sounds exactly what's goin on with my gen1. Thanks for the help guys!!!

I've found that if you can get in on the $50 off $125 coupon at Advance Auto Parts, you can get the Sealed Power rocker arms for cheap. It's only worth it if you have other stuff to buy, otherwise I'd be tempted to go OEM. For pushrods, RockAuto seems to be the best for price. I still have to get mine...

Goin to rock auto right now. I'm currently visiting family in texas, so hopefully all my parts will be waiting on me when I get back to good ole sc. I gotta say, I'm looking forward to this.
