I have done a major tune up in my truck including cleaning the MAF, if I did not reset the computer by unhooking the battery, what would happen? Worse gas mileage? The same? No difference?

It'll be fine...your gas mileage might go down for a little bit, but I have never affected mine with doing that sort of stuff. It should be back to normal in a couple days though, after the computer got used to everything.

On the other hand, if you unhooked the battery, the same thing would happen, since the computer has to relearn all the fuel trims and such.

Ahh, I was hopin that you would say something like "what are you crazy? if you didnt reset the computer you gas mileage would become terrible" because that is what has happened to my mileage. I just disconnected the battery today though and reset the computer.

What are the signs of a bad MAF?

I put an intake kit in my 2001, should I reset the computer or do you think the computer has learned it by now?? Did the intake about 3 weeks ago...

I think you are fine. As long as it runs fine, and your mileage isn't horrible.

It's been running just fine. I like to burn other explorers from time to time haha. It seems like I have more horse power between 2500-4000 rpm. as the owners manual states there is 245hp @5000 rpm (correct me if I'm wrong) cant wait to get exhaust and headers!!:salute:

No, you're looking at about 210 horsepower if you have the SOHC. It is around 245 lb.ft. of torque, and the engine displacement is 245 cubic inches.

how is the MAF cleaned
can i use brakecleaner on it or will that wreck the censer inside?

I went to Autozone and bought CRC MAF cleaner. Just spray it on, don't touch the sensor. It improved my mileage considerably and I didn't reset my computer.

The doctrine for cleaning "hotwire" MAFS is to use an appropriate solvent (carb cleaner is fine) but don't spray directly onto the sensor. Other than the sensor, there are plastics inside that can be damaged by harsh solvents. Spray the solvent on a rag and wipe down the major areas. For cleaning the wire, spray solvent onto a q-tip and very gently wipe the wire. You'll likely need both ends of the q-tip, and maybe more than one. CAREFULLY repeat until you no longer see a dark transfer onto the q-tip.

If you have to buy one, I got mine at Pep Boys for about $80 (+ a $50 cores). I bought it because it was made in Canada by Borg-Warner and may actually be OE.

MAF is attached to the air cleaner box. Has a 4 wire connector attached to it.

Typically, a MAF that is bad enough to cause noticable drivability issues will throw a code.
