I was having some issues, rough start on occasion, rough idle, hesitation when driving. I came here and did a search for those and saw lots of threads on pulling the TB and cleaning it, along with the MAF sensor. I just replaced the fuel filter in August, so I was pretty sure it couldn't be that, and was hoping it isnt because that thing is such a PITA to do.

So I pulled the MAF sensor and sprayed it down well with some MAF cleaner. Then I pulled my TB off and man it was GROSS!

So how often should I be pulling it off and spraying it down? Im at almost 120,000 miles right now. 4.0 SOHC.

I am pretty hopeful that cleaning that is going to make it run a lot better. It already sounds better at an idle, haven't driven it yet.

If the TB is really nasty, then you may have a bad PCV valve. When's the last time you replaced it?

Once a year for me on the TB and it's not really that nasty when I do it.

I replaced the PCV last summer actually, but did not think about cleaning the TB when I did it. So I am sure that contributed.

When you say you pulled off the Throttle Body, did you just pull off the air intake tubing off of it and spray TB cleaner in that way or physically unbolt the TB from the top of the engine and remove it completely? I also have a 2005 with the 4.0L V-6 and was wondering how difficult it is to unbolt or disconnect the TB from the engine to do a more thorough cleaning job of it? Are there any gaskets that need replacing etc? Thanks!

As long as everything else in the system is in good shape...never. The throttle body should not be getting dirty, and if it is you should look for the cause and fix it.

I clean my TB twice a year.

The first time cleaning it was at 112k miles and it was BLACK. It was probably the first time it has ever been cleaned.
