cleaning the head light lenses

hey, im sure im not the only one who has dirty of fade colored headlit lenses, but i was wondering if there was some special way to clean them and how i would go about doing so. im not very mechanically inclined. just let me know if anyone has done this and how difficult it was. thanx

I am experiencing the same dilemma on my 1995 Explorer, how the hell do you get those dirty, yellow lens covers clean! I would be very grateful to anyone who could tell us how to take care of this “grungy” situation (PUN intended LOL) !

I bought a bottle of Meguir's Clear Plastic Polish, I think it's called. It works fairly well. Also, do a search, someone once described a method to clean the inside surface of the lense.

You could also try wet sanding the outer lens with a 1000 - 2000 grit paper.

Will that not make the lens look cloudy? Or is the sand paper too fine to do any major damage to the plastic lens!?

Does anyone make glass replacements for the POS plastic originals?!?!!?

Bleach will yellow them more.

Super fine grit wet sanding will smooth out any surface imperfections, but the plastic itself of my lenses is defective.

There was a thread a while back with a lot of different things to use. I went with Blue Magic plastic and plexiglass polish. It worked pretty well. The more elbow grease and effort, the better the outcome.

No clue. I think it would depend on how the headlights are put together. It is only necessary if the lenses are glued to the reflector assembly like they were on that Supra. I haven't looked at mine that closely to see how they are attached. I just ran across that link yesterday and thought it would help out.

On my mustang (those are famous for getting the yellow haze on the lens' too) I used a good rubbing compound mixed with a lot of elbow grease.....then I finished it up with a coat of wax......they look brand new now. That combo worked well for me.

I've always treated those lenses with a good plastic polish and prtectant and have never had them cloud.

Good maintenance item.
