I have a 2000 ford explorer xlt 5.0 v8 all wheel drive. Changed the pinion seal and now there is a noticeable clicking noise..what did I do wrong? What to do to remedy this?

Does the front pinion have the crush sleeve like the rear does?

ALL pinion gear bearings have preload set by use of either a Crush Sleeve, or solid shim, in the case of heavy-duty application. Preload is critical to good gear and bearing life, as you already know.

I assumed it did, but I’ve only ever had issues with the rears.

The ‘mark and count the exposed thread’ trick works well, though. I’ve done a few pinion seals that way with no problems.

Add a beam in lb torque wrench
And 1 measurement
