Can anyone explain the clicking noise when in park at an idle in the motor area. The heater or AC isn't on. Not sure if this is normal or not. 03 Sport Trac

without the AC on

if you were to have the truck in park and you were just sitting there with it running, the truck idles normal without any increase in rpm but every 8 - 10 seconds you'd hear this "click" noise. I haven't checked but I don't think the fan is even running when it does it. I've notice that it does this everytime at park and sitting and at idle

It sounds to me like it is the A/C compressor cycling.
Most newer vehicles do this.
To make sure, open the hood, start the engine, and let it idle.
Then get out of the truck, and watch the A/C compressor pulley. When you hear the "click", watch and see if the hub (inside part of the pulley) spins. Kepp watching, and then see if it stops after a few seconds.

Odds are that is what you are hearing.

Turn the heat/AC control to off and see if the noise persists.

Don't forget the A/C compressor cycles in the Defrost setting too, besides just A/C setting.

Thanks guys, I'll check in the morning

MY truck does this too. Unfortunantly, the a/c compressor is always cycling. It doesn't matter if your a/c or heat is on. I'm actually looking into installing an a/c interrupt switch so that I can save gas and stop the a/c compressor from always running.

THANKS.........thats what it was. I put the heater switch on the "O" position and it stopped. Thanks again for the quick responses. Great site!

It does not run in the "off" and "vent" positions.
