I know the title sounds bad, but i hoped to get your attention. I have a 2002 Explorer XLT, 4x4 V6. When driving at very slow speeds 20 KM/H or less I get a clicking sound coming from the rear of the truck. It doesn't happen all the time. It may stop for a week and and then come back again. The best way to describe the sound is that of a clicking pen. The other issue I recently had which really sucked was my wife was putting the truck into drive and the shiffter handle snapped off from the stearing column, the dealership said they had to replace the entire column. $1200 later and no warranty. That was a bad day. Anyways any help would be appreciated.

Get it fixed now. Its more than likely the wheel bearing. don't let it go like I did. It ended up costing me $800 to fix mine, and that was just for the right rear. I needed a new hub assembly, because the wheel bearing ate it.

I have a 2002 xlt 4x4 as well with the same noise as yours. Check out your emergency brake shoes. Mine got to the point where the material on the shoe itself fell apart. I noticed it after taking it all apart to find the clicking noise. I cleaned up the mess and put everything back together without installing new shoes just as a test. I no longer had the noise. It was the same one that you are describing. Only happens at slow speeds, comes and goes.

Or it could be just a large stone caught in the tire tread! Happened to me a few months ago!

Had the same problem at first I thought it was the power locks on the rear door as it would come and go. I took it to the dealer ship and was advised that it was either the rear blower motor or the cage for the blower was loose. The motor was priced at $130 and the cage was $35.
Called the junk yard and picked one up for $25 bucks. Tomorrow I will attempt to put in. I may have to call for reinforcements before it's completed.

Guess it could be alot of things. Mine was the rear brakes. Just finished replacing the entire rear setup, rotors, pads, e-brake shoes, and a new hardware kit for the e-brake. I no longer have any clicking sounds.

Well I have good news and bad news. I pulled the back end apart this morning and after about 30 minutes worth of work I had the new blower motor in. Turned on the air and everything worked just fine.
After I got the side panel back in I stopped and turned the AC on again to make sure that I had the duct work lined up correctly and was getting air to the rear. That's when my clicking noise returned. :fire: It is coming from inside the unit somewhere but I can't pin point it. So I guess I am off to the dealership first thing in the morning with the whole side torn apart to see if they and tell me where to go next.

I have the same issue with the clicking sound from the rear heating/ac unit. the dealer said will cost 400 (100 for part and 300 for labor) + tax to repair. it's some switch module that causes the issue. Dealer is charging me over 80 bucks per hour in labor. it's is too much!!!!!!!!!!!!

Andy if I can do this anybody can. I went to the dealership again today and was told to pull the whole thing off the side to get the the switch. It's only three bolts and a few clips. I started on it and found that I need a deep well 10mm socket to get the front nut off. Of course I don't have one.
I will be waiting for the parts stores to open in the morning to get on. Taking the panels off is not that big of a deal just take your time and be a gentle and they will come. I am bound and determined to do this thing without the dealership getting my money execpt for maybe a part.

I got the part put it in. Come to find out that I had a blown fuse, as well. So I get the fuse in put it all back together and everything is running great. It cost a total of $80 and probably a grand total of 2 hours of my time
