I live in Texas and it is hot! Much to my surprise when I got into my 1992 explorer this morning and twisted the knob to turn on the A/C nothing happened.

I have been having problems with the knob the last few weeks. The plastic came completely off so I was using a pair of needle nose pliers until I had time to fix the knob. Fixed the knob about 2 weeks ago and everything seemed to be working just fine.

Now, pliers won't do anything either. The switch just spins but if with a little tweaking the A/C kicks on. As soon as the pliers are removed it goes back off. So right now I have to drive around with one hand on the pliers. Not a good situation. So I think the control know has shorted out but how do I replace? Where do I find a replacement? Can I use a control panel from a newer model?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Did you remove the clip that holds the knob? if not, you likely pushed it in too far and its stopping the switch from locking into place.

If it's not the clip, then you need a switch.

If your switch is bad, you can use a junkyard replacement - any from 91-94 should work fine. The only differences to my knowledge are between A/C equipped and non-A/C models. Also the 94 HVAC system has provisions for a heater bypass valve, which is very much worth installing (for colder A/C) if you have that stuff apart anyways. Do a search and you'll find the how-to thread.
