I believe its common for these front seals to leak alot when the tranny gets hot

If it was coming from the crack in between the motor and bellhousing of the tranny then chances are it is the front pump seal. Thats a very common problem with this tranny and a major pain in the a** to fix. Although it could have been the overflow in the tranny. If the tranny starts to overheat it will spit a ton of ATF out of the overflow tube. A couple weeks ago I was climing a steep rock gardan and on the last ledge I noticed the torque converter winding up like crazy and the truck was going nowhere. All of a sudden I smelt hot oil and 1.5 quarts spit out of the overflow. That was also just after a 1.5 hour drive on the highway.

Check your fan clutch, coolant level, radiator cap seal, and reserve tank. The engine might not appear to be overheating, but the ATF could be very hot. A heavy duty transmission cooler might help too. Check # 2 & # 9 in my list of useful threads for more information.

I was sort of thinking about that too. Could be coming out of the vent.

I wouldnt worry too much yet.

I had a 92 Mustang years ago... while driving on the highway, I turned back to talk to a friend and all this white smoke was pouring out behind me.. I immediatly pulled in and we all got out thinking the worst. There was a lot of tranny fluid on the ground. I guess when it blew it hit the exhaust and caused the white smoke... good thing it didnt ignite!!

Well I had no tranny fluid to add, and the dipstick still said full.
I took my time and drove home, crawled under and saw no more leaks.. and it never leaked after.

That happened to me while pulling a trailer in the summer, running the A/C. It was over 90 degrees outside, and the temp gauge wasn't happy. It was also a few weeks after I had the tranny fluid flushed, and the fluid was overfilled at the shop.

Learned that lesson the hard way, although I still don't know a great method for letting some fluid out without dropping the pan and gasket.

You could siphon some ATF out of the fill tube.

LOL that reminds me again of my Mustang story... when I got back home, the fluid level seemed high... so I figured I would siphon it all out and add some new fluid. Well my siphon with the squeeze ball didnt work so good so I resorted to the manual suck method... well 32 dry heaves later I gave up. I got about half a quart out...:D
