A few days ago I started noticing a clunking noise coming from underneath my 2001 Sport 4x4. It's very noticeable at under 5mph but as you accelerate it clunks so fast it turns into a humming noise. I jacked up the truck and while spinning the front tire seemed to have traced the noise to the area where the front drive shaft meets the differential (at least it seems to be coming from there). Any thoughts on what it could be? Drive shaft, u-joints, differential??? As I spin the tire sometimes the drive shaft stops spinning and will sometimes re-engage or I have to spin the tire the other direction and it re-engages. I was contemplating removing the drive shaft to see if the noise persists. Is this a good idea? Do I need to worry about anything if I remove the drive shaft? If I remove the shaft and that works can I continue driving it that way until I get the problem fixed? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
