Hi Everyone,
Firstly, I'd like to thank everyone for their time, patience and knowledge. In about a month, I will be celebrating my 6th year anniversary with my 02 Explorer! I'd like to think that this experience with my first car wouldn't have been as successful without the members of this forum.
Specs:
I have a 2002 Explorer XLT with about 196,300 miles on it, V6, no mods. As of about a month or two ago, I started having an intermittent issue which I believe may be transmission related.
Symptoms:
So, it started with the following symptoms:
When I was driving on the interstate, doing about 65mph, I noticed that when I let my foot off the gas, without pressing the brake, I would get a somewhat constant clicking sound every 2-3 seconds. Once I stepped on the gas again, it went away. This only seems to happen above 40/45 mph. The sound appears to be coming from near the front end of the vehicle, underneath. Driving around the city, I dont notice any of these symptoms.
The other symptom, which I believe may be related, comes when I shift into reverse. Sometimes when I shift into reverse, and let my foot off the brake pedal, once the car begins coasting backwards, I get a somewhat loud "boom" sound that sounds like I ran over something hard like a glass bottle. Sometimes its a subtle boom, and other times, it makes a louder boom and the car jerks a little. It does this at most once per reverse-cycle from what I've seen. Sometimes it doesn't do it.
Otherwise the car runs extremely smooth for having almost 200K miles!
What I've Tried:
I've tried changing a lot of things since the issue began. I changed the front CVs, new CV boots and all that. I also had all 4 struts and springs done. Front sway bar links were done. Two mechanics that I trust told me that the front end is tight and there's very little play anywhere on either front or back wheels. As well as from my own inspection, I observed no play.
At first, I thought it might've been my 4x4 acting up in case my front wheels and back had different rolling diameters. They are wearing about the same and all 4 tires are exactly the same make and model. I disconnected the 4x4 control module behind the dash just to see if the issue went away when I'm only back-wheel drive.. But the issue persists.
So does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue might be, I assume the symptoms may be related.
Thanks in advance!
