Engine backfire noise/transmission noise

Hi Folks,

Wonder if anyone can help here, my 1997 explorer has a couple of niggles,

First one is, when running at around 50mph and above when I have accelerated to my desired speed and ease of the throttle I get what I can only describe as an intermittent back fire noise from the front end of the engine/exhaust area. (I can hear it from the front seat area of the passenger side.

Second issue is, when stopped at lights etc with foot on the brake in drive there is a loud clicking noise from the gearbox and the tick over starts to rise and fall. If i let my foot of the break and the car moves forward the noise stops and everything is ok until I hold the car in park with the foot brake again.

Not sure what this is all about but hope someone can shed some light on it for me.

I would be having a look at the spark plugs and the exhaust. A leaking manifold gasket can cause a clicking noise as can a dodgy plug.
After fitting my engine i had a clicking noise around the bell housing that turned out to be the rear timing cassette.
Might be worth also checking symtoms of failing torque converter.
Always dificult to try and diagnose from a description

pulled the plugs out at the weekend and replaced them but still the same and now have the shredded hands too. I have noticed that the backfire/popping noise only happens at 50mph and above so not sure why no noise below this speed. Am I right in believing that the coil delivers a waste spark and could it be this that is igniting un burnt fuel and causing the noise???

On a gentle throttle at 50 mph, it should change into fifth. Press the overdrive button, so it won't go into fifth and see what happens.
