2002 explorer sport
Hi. I have a 2002 Explore Sport that I just installed new brakes and rotors. I also installed new monroe shocks, front and rear. My problem seams to be after I come to a stop, I hear a clunking sound, like I have a bad universal joint. I looked at the driveshaft, and the universals seam to be fine. I have about a half inch of play in the rear end if I move it back and forth. any ideals what it could be? Kinda seams like the truck has a follow through.....like and extra lunging while almost done braking. Any suggestions on what to look for would really be appreciated. Thank you.

Do you hear the noise when your foot is still on the brake pedal or when you take your foot off the pedal? Also are you moving when the noise happens?

Hi Norad. I hear the noise when I take my foot off the brake. Kinda like the drive shaft doesnt completely stop, if that makes sense.

I am wondering if your calipers are releasing slowly. I had a vehicle where when you tapped the break pedal you could hear a tapping noise at one of the brakes. The caliper was bad and there was a little air in the brake line. Was it hard to compress the calipers when you went to install your new brake pads? Did they retract with the same amount of force? Also have you ever bled the brake lines? Not trying to make more work for ya or anything.

Hi Norad. I'm pretty sure it's not the calipers. I replaced 3 out of 4 of them recently

Did you ever purge the brake lines after you replaced the calipers?

Check the tightness of the brake caliper mounting bolts asap. The bolts are often reinstalled without loctite when a caliper is removed and begin to work themselves loose a few weeks after installation.

Any solutions to this? My 96 does the exact same thing with all new calipers. I can't figure it out

Thank you so much! The popping is 80% gone. Is there any way to work the grease into the splines more?
