I have an 01' Explorer Sport with the 4.0, 108,000 miles. I am getting a sporadic loud and hard clunking sound that seems to be coming from the back but it hits so hard it comes right up into the seat. Anyway - I thought it was the icy roads until it started repeating but again, sporadically - I cannot get it to repeat. It seems to do it more at higher speeds - 45mph+.

It does it in two wheel drive and 4. Where do I begin - going to jack it up today and start inspecting to see if I can see anything visually.

What kind of clunking sound? Is it when going over a bump or pothole? Is it drivetrain related? I'm inclined to think that its suspension related though. Especially since its not repeatable. Does the truck drive or handle any different after the "clunk"?

clunking

it is hard to describe, it feels like my tire hits a ice patch - only happens for a split second. I am hoping it is suspension related. Its like a shuddering abrupt clunk then goes away. It has happened when I am accelerating and decelerating and again is very intermittent. If I were to guess it feels like it is coming from the rear end or at least somewhere behind me. is there a string of driving tests that I could do to perhaps get it to repeat.

tranny

Inspected underneath - all good - brought it for a test run - hard shifting into overdrive - I am leaning towards the tranny 108,000 miles on it - flush it or no?

Excessive acceleration?
